Studies: Academy for modern art in Barcelona and Paris
Carlos Mata was born in Palma de Mallorca (Spain) in 1949. He lived and worked in Barcelona, where he died in July 2008. Influenced by his mediterranean origins he was inspired by spanish life, landscapes and grounds. We find in his work the mystery of préhistoric arts and the colors of earth. Mata combines in his stylized horses and bulls the symbolic meaning of the animal with its grace and elegance. His work is mysterious and allows the viewer to uncover its hidden meaning or just to gaze at the stylish forms and lines. Carlos Mata’s sculptures are inspired by his childhood memories. He brings to life the original images when he was a small boy: dark profiles reduced to their essential outlines. His horses seem to be playful but proud, show characteristic features without volume. Their shapes represent the collective memory of ancient cultures, related to modern reality. Carlos Mata was an internationally renowned artist exhibiting in art fairs, public and private collections in Europe, South America and the United States.
