Zhuang Hong Yi’s works express beauty, sophistication and a high level of perfection with a clear presence of Chinese influence represented in his use of colours, themes, shapes and different materials that touch the heart.
The fact that one can easily identify features from his Chinese background which, at the same time, are gracefully combined with strong Western allure, confirms the artist’s upbringing and education in China and the international European experience and inspiration he gained since 1990, when he moved to The Netherlands and eventually settled there with his wife and artist, Lu Luo.
He studied at the prestigious Sichuan Fine Arts Institute and became apprentice at the established Minerva Academy in Groningen. Soon after the artist received international recognition and invitations followed to present his works in museums and galleries all over the world. Currently, even after many years of residence in Europe, Zhuang still holds his studio in Beijing, China, where he often returns to work, collect new materials and get inspiration. Embracing his present without losing his past the artist finds a balance between controlled planning and emotional gestures, between the very familiar and the foreign, which adds a mysterious touch to his work overall.
Since moving to Western Europe Zhuang Hong Yi’s style has continuously developed. The work extends itself to different forms, shapes and patterns, but also to a variety of materials and sizes. The flower motif, as the flower image carries countless meanings and emotions in Chinese culture, is dominant in Zhuang Hong Yi’s work. His “flowerbeds” are made from delicate pieces of painted rice paper, bent and folded into hundreds of tiny buds. Zhuang’s paintings distinguish themselves by a daring and surprising mix of bright colours.
His bold strokes are expressive as paint drips down the canvas and unites with the field of rice paper flowers. The three dimensional quality turns the work both into painting and sculpture. The artist also creates art objects in wood, porcelain and metal. But all of his work is inviting and continues to surprise the viewer, even those who know his art well.
Zhuang Hong Yi combines elements from his Chinese background with Impressionism and elements from other Western artistic practices, which has resulted in an impressive and delightful collection, created over the past 25 years.
In november 2023 Absolute Art Gallery published a hard cover book covering the work of Zhuang Hong-Yi.
